Tell us about yourself and the Dravet patient in your life
Travis, our warrior, is 3 year-old. He is a fraternal twin. He also has a 4 year-old brother. We live in Paradise Valley, AZ. We love spending time as a family; going swimming, visiting grandparents, going on walks, having get-togethers at our home, etc. Our boys actually enjoy being home so anything at home that puts a smile on their faces makes mom and dad happy too.
When did the patient’s seizures begin?
Travis had his first seizure at 7 months old and it lasted 18 minutes. Thirty days later, at 8 months old, Travis had his second seizure which lasted 70 minutes. Both seizures required multiple doses of rescue medication to be stopped. Soon after we discovered the gene mutations. Travis is now 3 years-old and on his third medication and still having daily seizures.
What is your hope for the future of your loved one? For the Dravet community?
We want to see a cure in our lifetime. We will help get there anyway we can.
What advice do you have for newly diagnosed Dravet families?
Special kids need special parents! You will have good days and bad days. You are human. Find a support group!!! Your friendships may change as people don’t understand what your family goes through. That’s ok. Your lifestyle may change. That’s ok. I actually like my life better now. I have slowed down and enjoy the simpler things. If you have other kids just wait and see the bond they have with your warrior. It’s magical. Special needs love is magnified beyond belief!
