DAF Day is October 10th!

What Is a Donor Advised Fund (DAF)?

A donor advised fund (DAF) is a charitable savings account that gives you the flexibility to recommend grants to Dravet Syndrome Foundation (DSF) and other qualified charities. This unique giving vehicle allows you to make an immediate impact on supporting Dravet syndrome research and advocacy, while creating a legacy of philanthropy.

You can also create a lasting legacy by naming Dravet Syndrome Foundation as the beneficiary of the entire account or a percentage of the fund. With a percentage, you can establish a family legacy of giving by naming your loved ones as your successor to continue recommending grants to charitable organizations. Contact your fund administrator for a beneficiary form.

How Does a DAF Work?

A donor advised fund allows you to set aside assets for charitable purposes while receiving an immediate tax benefit. Once you’ve established a DAF, you have the flexibility to decide when and where the funds should be distributed to support organizations like Dravet Syndrome Foundation.

An Example of How a DAF Works

Tim and Jane want to give back to their local community by putting their money where it will do the most good. They establish a $10,000 donor advised fund with a community foundation. The couple receives an immediate federal income tax deduction for the amount of the charitable contribution. They also get the time they need to decide which charities to support.

After researching community needs with the foundation’s staff, Tim and Jane recommend grants for DSF (which they’ve supported for years) and a local emergency shelter. The community foundation presents the charities with checks from the Samantha Fund, which Tim and Jane named in honor of their daughter who has Dravet syndrome. They name DSF as the beneficiary to receive the account balance after their lifetimes. Tim and Jane are delighted to start this personal legacy of giving.
